Xaml Designer4/20/2021
I dont want to see TVs in cars just because 5 million people request it.But nothing I could really call a normal app where I would be using the designer.Got a survey mail from Pierce Boggan Program Manager, Mobile Developer Tools Visual studio Tools Hope they develop Xamarin Forms in the right direction by start adding design tools like Blend for making first class Fluent Design Apps inline with UWP standards.I think the days are over for trivial user experiences on mobile devices.even for LOB.2018 guys;-).
![]() Still no merge-dictionary on par with WPF. No ViewBox. No horizontal layout for a ListView. Even the simple Label still has alignment problems when binded. Cant bindpass anything that evaluates to null to a converter, and 100 other foundation items that dont exist in Xamarin that WPF developers have had for a decade. Instead of resolving everything in the Bugzilla they simply migrated away from it hoping all the unfinished work would fall through the cracks and be forgotten about. Thats no way to support the people who were early adopters and found all those problems for you and took the time to document them in the hopes they would be resolved. I would just prefer they get prioritized after the work in the guts of the eco-system. A design tool would be nice, I think the 3rd party control providers will provide something, I noticed Telerik has moved its theming capabilities on a lot but that shouldnt have to be the case. ![]() So it puts it at absolute 221x457 with padding of 342,133,27,93 and margin of 98,42,111,12 - You cant be mad at the tool; it had to make some sort of guess. When Blend was first released back in 2008, I felt like you.I spent more time cleaning the crap that Blend spewed out than if I had written it by hand. By 2010 they had an amazing system for managing grid layouts.want to insert a new column in the middle of your grid Have fun updating the 20 items that now have to have their column number incremented by 1 if youre doing that by hand. Or in Blend, insert new column and tada, all of that is done for you. The gotcha is that you have to learn the tool in order to get to that level. As much as I LOVE XAML and the ability to create cross platform UIs with a single code base, knowing what I had before with Blend feels like the phantom limb syndrome: my mind knows there should be something there but its not. I get it in so much as you have to have different namespaces to avoid confusion. Xamarin used to be its own company and all of their work was outside of Microsoft. And personally I think from the time of the purchase of Xamarin in 2016 to now should have been enough time for the vast resources of Microsft to get the two in-line and consolidated to a single flavor of XAML that all the tools played well with. Right now its just that painful mid-point between A and B. Xaml Designer Plus The FactHopefully like you mentioned the XAML Standard will address some of this (plus the fact that XForms is heading toward being the deFacto UI across all platforms for.NET). Its getting there but this definitely reminds me of the WPF beta days. Imho we are not going to have it for at least few years, in the meantime i hope that they just buy LiveXaml, hire the guy behind it and finally ship an usable previewer, not the crap that are Forms Previewer and Xamarin Live Player.
